Happy Easter! :: Colouring Eggs

Happy Easter, everyone!

These eggs were coloured using a simple easter egg kit that my Mum bought from the US. It came complete with little bowls and a wire egg dipper and colouring tablets.

To be honest, I found that the wire egg dippers were a little flimsy for the kids. I much preferred using steamboat nets which I did last year.

Both kids had a lot of fun. My younger son, K couldn't wait to remove the eggs so his eggs were lighter in colour.

J was happier to let them soak and simmer for quite a while.

K obviously needs more training in delayed gratification.

But it was fine.

He managed to colour the eggs and not tip over the dye so it worked out!

If you want to try this at home, you just need the following:

- white shelled eggs (or beige shelled eggs if you plan to colour them a more intense shade)
- food colouring
- white wine vinegar
- water
- container
- steamboat nets (or be prepared to have stained fingers)

1. Place the eggs in a pot and fill with cold water. Bring the water to a boil and boil for a further 10 minutes.

2. After which, remove the eggs and place in a bowl of cold water to bring the temperature down. This will also ensure that the egg yolks remain bright yellow.

3. Fill a number of disposable tupperwares with water that reaches the midway mark.

4. Add a few drops of food colouring to each tupperware. For a more intense colour, add more colouring.
(You can add more later if you feel that the eggs are too light in colour or just leave it in the coloured water for a longer duration.)

5. Add one tablespoon of vinegar. This is optional but if you want to achieve a smooth, even coloured egg, then don't leave out this trick.

6. Drop the egg in gently and remove once the egg has reached the perfect intensity that you desired.

7. Dry with a paper towel.

8. Refrigerate until ready for serving. Eggs can be displayed and should be safe for consumption up to 2 hours in the open.

We coloured 36 eggs in all and brought them to church to share with our church family.

Realised later that they might have looked prettier in a basket!

Oh well, there's always next year.

Hope you had a Happy Easter!
